Wise Guys Book Review and Giveaway! (Ends May 31st)

I was given the opportunity to review the book Wise Guys:  Unlocking Hidden Wisdom From The Men Around You by Kent Evans with Rob Suggs.  This book is actually geared towards men but I figured I probably would find some interesting tidbits in it and I most certainly did!

WISE GUYS

For guys, more than ever, it’s a confusing world. Your GPS doesn’t offer any maps showing how to get to the point of wisdom — and who likes asking for directions anyway?

But there are ways to get that guidance you need. The answers may be all around you, in the form of guys you already know. Wise guys. More experienced guys. Better-traveled guys. Could there be ways to tap into their invaluable knowledge without enduring dull lectures or taking pages of notes?

Kent Evans has surrounded himself with these wise guys. They have shown him all the back roads on the way to wisdom. With a great deal of humor and an endless supply of stories, he wants to show you how to gather life-enriching truth from the guys in your own circle.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

KENT EVANS is the board chairman and co-founder of Manhood Journey, a ministry that helps fathers and mentors build the next generation of godly men.  Kent has personally experienced how the guidance of godly men can change the course of a life.  Today he is blessed with a solid 20-year marriage, four wonderful sons and a fulfilling life – largely because of what he’s learned from other men.  He lives in Louisville, Kentucky, and can be found on Twitter @manhoodjourney.

MY REVIEW

This book is a great read.  It is so interesting to relate my life to what the author has gone through in life.  It mirrors it in a way but I do feel like I definitely didn't have the type of people in my life until very recently that he did - since an early age.  Or maybe I just never recognized them in my life?

But anyways the book begins by stating about the situation that we're living in right now.  The situation I'm talking about is no fathers in the home or fathers who are selfish/disengaged.  It is such a sad situation.  24 million children have no father present - 1 in 3 kiddos.  I was one of those kiddos.  I didn't know any different but now the affects of having no father are starting to be glaring in my life and I'm having to face these issues head on.  Thankfully - since I've started realizing what is really important in life and directing my life in a certain way to bring good family oriented people in my life which includes a lot of Christian folks who have been such a blessing in my life - it is a lot easier to deal with these issues when you have such a strong support system and good role models to look up to.

The point the author wants to make is if you consider people in your own life who you could humbly approach for help, then he's done his job.  It is also about helping men learn how to learn from each other.  Listening as we live.  Direct and indirect learning.  Direct learning through wisdom and indirect learning from observing others behavior and how they handle certain situations.

It is such a good book.  Super easy to read.  16 personal stories which you could read one story at a time or just gobble it up in one sitting.  There are so many good nuggets of information in there to take with you to apply in your own life.

I'll end my review by telling you about something his shrink (he had when he was a teenager) said to him that really hit me hard.  I'm paraphrasing a bit but he said "You'd rather not end up in the same situation?  Stop trying to not do this or not be that.  Instead, find some men who have the life you want, and figure out why their situation is the way it is.  Then do some thinking.  What is it that makes these guys worth imitating?  What do they have or embody that you want?  Learn from them and then model yourself after the parts you like."

So profound and he heard that at such a young age!  I wish I would have heard that then.  So if you have teenagers...get this book and give them these words!  I feel like I can relate to it in a way.  A couple of years ago, I was in a super dark place living in Omaha chasing my ambitions which left me totally empty.  A spiritual teacher posted a blog about finding your purpose.  He said, find whatever makes you the happiest and do that or create a life where you are doing that.  Now my happiest times are no where near work haha but that didn't matter to me - my happiest times were being surrounded by friends which were like family and shooting the breeze.  So it took a bit but I set out by getting a job near one of my good friends (took a risk and moved from Omaha to Florida - somewhere foreign to me really)...and her family and church embraced me as their own and I kept focusing on putting more people in my life who could be my pseudo family and I keep doing that to this day.   So many people I want to emulate every day.  They are such a blessing for me and I'm trying to create the life I want (happiness) by bringing these amazing people in my life and trying to emulate the goodness they radiate.  I wish I had started earlier in life - but maybe somehow in the future I can encourage others to do the same thing.  There's hope for happiness in our lives no matter how bad our lives started or what types of hardships came into our lives.

And now for the giveaway!  The sponsor is giving away a copy of the book Wise Guys!  Good luck!

Bearing Witness Book Review and Giveaway! (Ends 30 May)

I was given the book, Bearing Witness, to review.  I was interested in this book because I'm still in the beginning stages of learning about Christianity.  So I was excited to be chosen to get a chance to really learn about the sacrifices people have gone through in the past for Christianity.

About Bearing Witness: Stories of Martyrdom and Costly Discipleship

From the stoning of Stephen in the first-century Jerusalem to Nigerian Christians persecuted by Boko Haram in 2015, these stirring accounts will inspire greater faithfulness to the way of Jesus, reminding believers what costly discipleship looks like in any age.  Bearing Witness brings together dozens of accounts from around the world of Christians who gave witness to their faith in the face of intense persecution, even if it costs them their lives.

In selecting stories for this book, the editors focused on Anabaptist martyrs and others who suffered for their commitment to believer’s baptism and nonviolence.

            Publisher: Plough Publishing House
            Category: Christianity/History
            Binding: Softcover
            240 pages

About the editors:

Charles E. Moore has complied and edited several acclaimed books and Timothy Keiderling is a researcher for the Bearing Witness Stories Project.

My Thoughts:

This book is very interesting.  I honestly had no idea what people of the Christian faith have gone through.  There are so many stories of people who had unwavering faith in Christ and what he did.  It is pretty amazing and makes me look at my life and see if I would have unwavering faith like they did.  The torture these people put up with was unbelievable.  All for their faith and with them being martyrs or succumbing to society's punishment against them, they kept this religion alive.  It is really inspiring but at the same time, you hurt for what they went through.  So it is a pretty good book in my opinion to open your eyes to what people went through for their faith and I think it makes you ask yourself if you're that strong in your faith to do what they did.

Shredded Chuck Roast

For all you guys out there that eat the way I do (zero carb) and for all the others that just love meat, here is a pretty simple recipe to make shredded beef.

I first bought a chuck roast.  It was a 3lb slab but next time I'll probably buy a bigger one so I can freeze some of the beef.  The other ingredient I used was bone broth (which you can see how to make HERE).

Then I lined my crock pot with one of those slow cooker bags - genius idea - no cleanup!  Then put the slab of meat in the pot.  Poured 1/2 cup of bone broth in, covered with the lid, and put on low for 6 hours.

After 6 hours, you take it out and shred it with meat claws.

Then you put it back in for an hour or two to finish cooking.  And tada!

I will advise you to drain all the liquid as you can as the fat from the meat dissolved in the broth.  I have a real hard time with too much fat so it definitely caused me issues because I didn't realize the fat was in it and I initially ate the beef as a stew as you can tell in the picture!

The beef was AMAZING.  Such a simple recipe and you don't really have to do anything to make it.  I also like to take the beef and fry it on the stove to get it all nice and crispy on the outside.  Divine!

ESV Family Devotional Bible Review & Giveaway! (Ends May 18th)

I got the opportunity to review the ESV Family Devotional Bible.  I'm pretty new at going to church even though I'm 38 years old.  But ever since I've been really faithfully going, I've wanted to take in everything about God and the Bible so this was perfect for me to review.

The ESV FAMILY DEVOTIONAL BIBLE is a hardbound colorful Bible.  It retells 130 key stories from the Bible with full color illustrations for each story, as well as placed within the Bible text where it is found.  The stories are simplified and easy for children of all ages to understand.

The ESV Family Devotional Bible is designed to help families read and apply God’s Word together. This full-color edition features the complete ESV text interspersed with engaging illustrations and gospel-centered devotions related to key Bible stories—guiding families through the entirety of God’s Word over the course of a year. Each devotion also includes discussion questions and suggestions for additional reading, helping families develop a habit of reading the Bible together and applying its truth to all of life.

I really love this Bible.  For someone who is just learning (and struggling at times with reading and understanding) the Bible, this is perfect.  There are stories in certain sections so you can read that to get the idea of what is going on in a way that is easily understandable.  Then it asks you questions which you could probably utilize in Bible studies (which I partake in weekly to learn more about the Bible).  Then it has the key verse which you could try to memorize to keep with you to look back on as you go through life.

This Bible is also well made - love that it is hardbound so it is very sturdy and it has the ribbon so you can mark your page.  It is also a very colorful book which keeps my interest and probably would keep many children's interest as well.

Here are some social links you can visit to learn more about this particular Bible:

And now for the Giveaway!  Through Fly By Promotions, I will be giving away a copy of the ESV Family Devotional Bible!  Just enter in the rafflecopter below.

Go God Revival ~~ Carlos Whittaker Message

SO amazing I had to post this on my blog.  I was there for this and it affected me so much.  I've been in a real bad funk lately due to personal reasons and he just GOT me.  He told a story towards the end which mirrored what I've partially been dealing with lately.  It hit me to the core and made total and complete sense to me so I can hopefully still be doing God's work but not let the way people react to me affect me.
