Wise Guys Book Review and Giveaway! (Ends May 31st)

I was given the opportunity to review the book Wise Guys:  Unlocking Hidden Wisdom From The Men Around You by Kent Evans with Rob Suggs.  This book is actually geared towards men but I figured I probably would find some interesting tidbits in it and I most certainly did!

WISE GUYS

For guys, more than ever, it’s a confusing world. Your GPS doesn’t offer any maps showing how to get to the point of wisdom — and who likes asking for directions anyway?

But there are ways to get that guidance you need. The answers may be all around you, in the form of guys you already know. Wise guys. More experienced guys. Better-traveled guys. Could there be ways to tap into their invaluable knowledge without enduring dull lectures or taking pages of notes?

Kent Evans has surrounded himself with these wise guys. They have shown him all the back roads on the way to wisdom. With a great deal of humor and an endless supply of stories, he wants to show you how to gather life-enriching truth from the guys in your own circle.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MY REVIEW

This book is a great read.  It is so interesting to relate my life to what the author has gone through in life.  It mirrors it in a way but I do feel like I definitely didn't have the type of people in my life until very recently that he did - since an early age.  Or maybe I just never recognized them in my life?

But anyways the book begins by stating about the situation that we're living in right now.  The situation I'm talking about is no fathers in the home or fathers who are selfish/disengaged.  It is such a sad situation.  24 million children have no father present - 1 in 3 kiddos.  I was one of those kiddos.  I didn't know any different but now the affects of having no father are starting to be glaring in my life and I'm having to face these issues head on.  Thankfully - since I've started realizing what is really important in life and directing my life in a certain way to bring good family oriented people in my life which includes a lot of Christian folks who have been such a blessing in my life - it is a lot easier to deal with these issues when you have such a strong support system and good role models to look up to.

The point the author wants to make is if you consider people in your own life who you could humbly approach for help, then he's done his job.  It is also about helping men learn how to learn from each other.  Listening as we live.  Direct and indirect learning.  Direct learning through wisdom and indirect learning from observing others behavior and how they handle certain situations.

It is such a good book.  Super easy to read.  16 personal stories which you could read one story at a time or just gobble it up in one sitting.  There are so many good nuggets of information in there to take with you to apply in your own life.

I'll end my review by telling you about something his shrink (he had when he was a teenager) said to him that really hit me hard.  I'm paraphrasing a bit but he said "You'd rather not end up in the same situation?  Stop trying to not do this or not be that.  Instead, find some men who have the life you want, and figure out why their situation is the way it is.  Then do some thinking.  What is it that makes these guys worth imitating?  What do they have or embody that you want?  Learn from them and then model yourself after the parts you like."

So profound and he heard that at such a young age!  I wish I would have heard that then.  So if you have teenagers...get this book and give them these words!  I feel like I can relate to it in a way.  A couple of years ago, I was in a super dark place living in Omaha chasing my ambitions which left me totally empty.  A spiritual teacher posted a blog about finding your purpose.  He said, find whatever makes you the happiest and do that or create a life where you are doing that.  Now my happiest times are no where near work haha but that didn't matter to me - my happiest times were being surrounded by friends which were like family and shooting the breeze.  So it took a bit but I set out by getting a job near one of my good friends (took a risk and moved from Omaha to Florida - somewhere foreign to me really)...and her family and church embraced me as their own and I kept focusing on putting more people in my life who could be my pseudo family and I keep doing that to this day.   So many people I want to emulate every day.  They are such a blessing for me and I'm trying to create the life I want (happiness) by bringing these amazing people in my life and trying to emulate the goodness they radiate.  I wish I had started earlier in life - but maybe somehow in the future I can encourage others to do the same thing.  There's hope for happiness in our lives no matter how bad our lives started or what types of hardships came into our lives.

And now for the giveaway!  The sponsor is giving away a copy of the book Wise Guys!  Good luck!
